And the waiting is the hardest part.
I'm trying my best to figure out why I am so edgy lately. I've finally gotten part of the kitchen done, so it's not that. My husband is happy with me, so it's not that. Deep down I know what it is...it's waiting on the results of the voting from the There Fashion Challenge Finale. I'm not really thinking about it, I'm concentrating on housework, but it's sitting like dead weight in the back of my mind. My subconscious is definitely not letting me off the hook until the announcement of the results.
On June 1st, there was a big shake up in There. One of my friends, a fellow designer, gave me a buzz on Yahoo Instant Messenger with a link to a blog called the "There Fashion Challenge".
As I watched the video entitled, "Do you have what it takes?"My heart flew directly into my throat and I instantly started to have anxiety about sending in a portfolio. Now I had been having enough trouble mustering the guts to send out my real graphic artist portfolio because I didn't think I was good enough, even with my degree, to get a job out in the real world, much less sending a portfolio of virtual clothing that doesn't sell very well to be put in a pot filled with talented people who's clothes DO sell well. But, I sent it in...well, actually, I made my husband press the send button, I was too nervous to do it myself. My designer friend told me that I had to do it, just to go along and be moral support for her, so I said to hell with it, what have I got to lose? Well on June 19th, I found out I was good enough and I was put into the contest with 11 other designers.
My husband said, "In a contest like this, it is like going hiking in the woods with a bunch of friends and a bear comes out and begins to chase you. What is important is to not concentrate on being in the lead running away from the bear, but to make sure you are not the last one in the back next to the bear." Well, the bear was in full sprint and he ate more than a few designers on the way to the end.
Week 1 was a pirate, modeled oh so well by my MAB buddy Blake. A dirty shirt with ripped sleeves really did the trick I guess, because I made it through to week 2.
Week 2 was arguably the most controversial challenge because we didn't design anything. We had to take a screenshot of models at a landmark. Well, the bear sniffed at me, but he ate someone else instead.
Week 3 saw the update of the There Icon Aral. She's the spokes-avatar for There. Well, there was no sniffing that week, but no win either. However, the jeans I made for that week sell like hotcakes.
Week 4, I thanked God for my father. It was the 50's. We came so close to the front of the pack on that one...disappointing to know that some people just don't have any courage when it comes to the color pink. But it's not important to be at the front of the pack, just avoid the bear charging up the back. But I do have to say, if it wasn't for Blake again, it wouldn't have come off as well. He's a huge man (in avatar form), so being that big and buff really gave the pink shirt a lot of macho character.
Week 5, the floating islands of Saja. OMG, I worked my butt off on that one...and it is a popular seller, so I'm thankful that people like it enough to buy it. No win, but no bear either.
Week 6, ThereGames. I will remain mute and silent on this one. I have a few choice words for some people on that one but I am just happy I made it past the bear and safely back to civilization on that one. I'm just tickled to death that my friend Geea won that week, she's a wonderful person and deserved the win.
The bear was gone after week 6, he had his last meal. Now it was purely designing for the love of design. The stress was gone and I had made it to the finals with two of my neighbors from the Village Marketplace. I will admit, when I heard the results and that I would be going to the finals, I did dance to Blind Melon's "Three is a Magic Number" from Schoolhouse Rock. Only one problem, at the pace we had been keeping, and going through all of the stress that we were going through, I would have rather electrocuted myself rather than look at another wire frame. Plus, week 7 asked for 9 pieces. 9 Freaking pieces. I was already churning out more than I normally do, but for them to say, Hi, you've got to make 9 pieces in 10 days...my first reaction was, "are they NUTS?". Well, I got through it...September, October and November...3 complete outfits...that are really good looking, I think. Not my best work ever, but, they are something I think just might and I say MIGHT resonate with the voters. You never know.
Voting closed yesterday at 6pm Pacific time. Right now in the There Offices in San Mateo, California, I'm sure that they are tallying votes and sending out the paperwork for us to sign regarding our prizes.
My husband said it best when I submitted my work on Wednesday morning...
"You did great, the clothes are beautiful, and either way, we'll be getting something in the mail."
Yeah, but my whole thing is what to plan for... A Laptop, a Video iPod or a PlayStation Personal game console. The Laptop and iPod, I have plenty of use for, but a PSP? If I take 3rd place, I just might send it to my nephew who is at college.
Now it's all down to the waiting. And to be honest, it's killing me. I want this thing to be over already! But alas, it's not, the winners will be officially announced on Friday. 3 very long days away.
Tom Petty sang it, I'm living it...The Waiting is the Hardest Part.
