People fear me.
Last night, I was talking to a very close friend of mine. I asked him point blank why it was that every time a big event or something huge comes up in There, me and my designs and all the rest of what I do in There are always passed over by the membership and the Staff...
He put it in 3 words.
"People fear you."
Now that really bothered me...Why do people fear me? I'm usually very kind and good natured and I always have a smile for everyone I come across. I empower the people around me, I always encourage and applaud the people around me. When I don't know something, I'm always the first person to raise their hand and say, "I don't know".
However, when I told my husband, he wasn't surprised in the least, he agreed wholeheartedly with my friend and said, "Of course they do."
I still sat back in shock...Why? Why would people fear me?
When he saw the puzzled look on my face, he looked at me and said, "How many people do you personally know, that we would have over for dinner that you respect and would call a strong person?"
Oooh, that got my attention. I counted them on both hands. There are all of about 10 people I would say that about that I have known in my life.
He said that people feared me because:
1. I'm smart.
2. I have a level of awareness that others may never get to.
3. I know what I know and I know what I don't know.
4. I'm good at whatever I decide to do.
5. I have a good and strong character.
I'm still sitting back and reeling from that response because I really don't see myself that way. My first priority when I show my public face is to always make my words kind, gentle and tasteful. If a student comes up and wants my opinion, I'll be honest with them and I will carefully and constructively try to encourage them to do better. When I post in the (ugh) forums, it is for the most part uplifting and always has a sense of humor about it.
My good friend also told me that people fear me because they know if they screw up around me, I will not hesitate to illuminate the truth in the matter and so since they don't want to look ignorant, they would rather avoid coming up against me.
I asked my husband if fear was the reason people didn't buy my clothes and such in There, he simply said, "No, fear doesn't have anything to do with it", he went on to say, "You are in a different place than all of those people are; Simply, you're Forum Shops, they're Wal-mart, end of discussion."
Well, Machiavelli said it best I guess, "It is better to be feared than loved."
At least with fear comes respect. And that is the one thing I do get from even the people who don't really like me...Respect. In the end, I guess that's what it's all about.
So, people fear me....Good.
BOO!
